Sunmark Credit Union has a rich history in the Capital Region, dating back to its establishment in January 1937 as the Schenectady G.E. Turbine Department’s Federal Credit Union #1884 by General Electric employees. Over the years, the credit union expanded its services and branch locations, eventually consolidating its name to Turbine Federal Credit Union in 1983.
In 1997, reflecting a broader member base, the credit union changed its name to Sunmark. Subsequently, in 2002, Sunmark expanded its membership eligibility to include residents and workers in Schenectady, Albany, Saratoga, and Rensselaer counties. Additional counties, such as Montgomery and Schoharie, were included in 2005.
In 2020, Sunmark received approval to convert from a federal to a state-chartered credit union, officially updating its name to Sunmark Credit Union. With this conversion, Sunmark expanded its service area to include Warren, Fulton, Columbia, Greene, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester Counties, as well as individuals belonging to businesses or associations partnering with Sunmark.
Throughout its history, Sunmark has adapted to members’ changing needs by adding new branch locations, technologies, and services, all while upholding the credit union mantra of “”People helping People.
